There is, one can only imagine, a limit to the level of power that can safely be channelled through the front wheels of a common or garden Japanese hatchback.Around 180bhp or so would seem to be the natural cut off point. Beyond that plow-on understeer and ridiculous handling start to defeat the purpose of a so-called Super-Hatch.
It is therefore, with a degree of trepidation that we await the February 2007 arrival of the Mazda3 MPS. With a 2.3 litre turbocharged engine kicking out close to 260bhp thi spocket rocket can hit 60 in 6.1 seconds and top out at an artificially limited 155mph.
It should, at the very least, give the forthcoming Civic Type-R and the new Leon Cupra a run for their money.
